Singapore GP set for pecking order refresh as Red Bull battle Mercedes
The aggressive pattern between the three teams observed in the two races will almost certainly change quite considerably at Singapore this weekend.
Ferrari’s hopes of continued its winning arrangement from Spa and Monza must be considered weak. By comparison, Red Bull may feel justified in feeling optimistic about this race, to get specific technical reasons in both instances.
Where does this render Mercedes’ prospects?

In terms of circuit requirements, there might not be a starker contrast between Singapore along with Monza a week. The street circuit across the city state needs the absolute reverse, whereas the Italian trail is all about low drag even at the cost of downforce.
As measured by how much lap time that a increase in downforce may buy, singapore is approximately twice as sensitive to downforce as Monza. It is less than half as debilitating to haul. In terms of the electricity sensitivity of the track, Singapore is down close to the bottom of the listing, with extra power worth only across two-thirds of this lap time that it would reward you with Monza.
In the GPS traces (provided by the FIA) all the teams seethey all understand the comparative strengths and weaknesses of each others’ automobiles. The pattern between the top few cars this year is clear and reveals the Ferrari to be low in drag but weak and super-strong in power in downforce. Because its advantages are less valued at Singapore compared to Monza, and its own weaknesses punished more, it’s probably not likely to be putting the pace through the roads – though Sebastian Vettel (a four-time pole winner , like Lewis Hamilton) has pulled out several exceptional qualifying laps in the past and Charles Leclerc is super-quick around road paths.
Red Bull has traditionally flown around Singapore as it generated a vehicle with a spread of ranges. Because its mid-season upgrades, the RB15 has conformed very considerably for this routine and the team has been quite selective about when to present its updated Honda Spec 4 electricity units specifically to increase its chances round a track in which it hopes to compete for success.
This downforce brings with it an associated cost in drag and at its best – that’s why those races were selected for the motor penalties of Max Verstappen along with Alex Albon respectively the automobile was not seen at Spa and Monza. This cancel engine penalty had the effect of taking the strain off new recruit Albon in as he has played himself that it has prevented a direct qualifying contrast between him Verstappen. Verstappen produced an Singapore qualifying lap last year to place himself to the front row and this a level of performance is the strong bar against which Albon is going to be measured.
Singapore was originally Mercedes’ just bogey track, as highlighted by an off-the-pace functionality here in 2015. But since then it has mastered the place. At the conception of this W10, a number of these aerodynamic efficiency of Mercs was surrendered to prioritise downforce beneath the aero regs. This has been a strength of the automobile this season through slow speed corners. Its performance profile is now like that of their Red Bull, feeble and each strong in the exact places.
Everything points to a conflict between Mercedes and Red Bull across the roads, continuing where they left off in Hungary. Hamilton and Verstappen are effective at forcing each other into the very outer borders of possibility between the unforgiving walls. They shared with the front row and did exactly the same at Hungary this year before F1 seen the two tracks. On that event, Verstappen took pole just because he managed to get his tyres up before the corner and Hamilton did not. But that was because tyre wear had been prioritised by Mercedes for its race – and did really have the faster car at Budapest.
The pointers are this will be a superbly closely-contested event.
