National Hockey League All-Star Game
The National Hockey League All-Star Game (French: Match des ??toiles de la Ligue Nationale de Hockey) is an exhibition ice hockey game that is traditionally held during the normal season of the National Hockey League (NHL), with many of the League’s star players playing against each other. Each team plays with four players. The Game’s proceeds benefit the pension fund of these gamers.
The NHL All-Star Game, held in late January or early February, marks the emblematic halfway point from the regular season, although not the mathematical halfway point which, for most seasons, is generally a couple of months earlier. Since 2007, it’s held in late January. From 1947 to 1968, the All-Star Game primarily watched the previous season’s Stanley Cup champions choose a group of All-Stars in the other clubs. There were two exceptions in this period: The 1951 and 1952 games instead featured two teams of All-Star players, one consisting of gamers on American-based teams and the other with players consisting of players around Canadian-based teams.
Starting in 1969, the arrangement was geographic with all the Wales/Eastern Conference All-Stars enjoying with the Campbell/Western Conference All-Stars, in which the”first group”, or beginning line, such as the starting goaltender, voted in by fans, while the remainder of the teams’ rosters are chosen from the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department in consultation with the groups’ general managers. Since 1996, the head coaches for the two All-Star teams are the coaches of both teams that are leading their respective conferences in point percent (i.e. fraction of points obtained out of total possible points). Ahead policy saw the two head coaches who appeared in the previous year’s Stanley Cup Finals coaching the All-Star teams.
The 1998 All-Star Game has been held in the very same year as the 1998 Winter Olympics at Nagano, supplying the NHL to show its players from all around the world. To this extent, the NHL had the All-Star teams consist of a group of North Americans playing with a group of stars from the rest of the world. The North America vs. World All-Star format continued through the 2002 Gamethe same year since the 2002 Winter Olympics, before reverting to the Eastern vs. Western Conference format in 2003.
Throughout the 2010–11 year, the NHL announced a change to the way the teams were selected, modeled following drafts in fantasy sports. The conference vs. conference (i.e. East vs. West) strategy was replaced by a participant draft performed by the All-Star players to determine the rosters for every team. The captains for every team today pick players from a joint pool of both fan balloting and the NHL Hockey Operations Department. The change in structure was a joint effort from the League and the National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA). This format lasted throughout the 2015 game.
The All-Star Game is preceded by the NHL All-Star Skills Competition, a contest showing the numerous talents of the all-stars. Beginning in 2007, the All-Star weekend also featured the NHL YoungStars Game, an exhibition game only featuring rookies, playing under slightly modified rules. In 2011 this game was removed in favor of getting the rookies compete at the skills competition.
